What electrolytes does Acetazolamide affect?

Monitor electrolytes periodically — thiazides cause potassium loss similar to loop diuretics but less dramatically.

When should Acetazolamide be taken?

Most diuretics are taken in the morning to avoid nocturia (night-time urination) disrupting sleep. If a second dose is needed, take it no later than midday.

Can Acetazolamide be used in kidney disease?

Thiazides are generally ineffective when eGFR falls below 30ml/min; loop diuretics (furosemide) are preferred in significant renal impairment.

Does Acetazolamide cause dehydration?

All diuretics increase urine output and can cause dehydration if fluid intake does not compensate. Symptoms: excessive thirst, dizziness, low blood pressure, concentrated dark urine. Maintain adequate fluid intake and contact your physician if these symptoms occur.

Is Acetazolamide a blood pressure medication?

All diuretics reduce blood pressure as a secondary effect of volume reduction. Chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide are specifically used as antihypertensives. Furosemide is primarily used for oedema — it is less preferred for hypertension due to short duration of action.
