Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis via penicillin-binding protein binding, causing bacteriolysis. This mechanism of action makes Amoxicillin Trihydrate effective against mild bacterial infections, paediatric infections, dose adjustment in renal impairment, h. pylori (lower-dose components).
For mild infections (minor skin infections, mild otitis media, dental abscess in lower-risk patients), 250mg three times daily is often sufficient. For moderate-to-severe infections — pneumonia, moderate UTI, sinusitis — 500mg three times daily is the standard adult dose. Your prescriber will choose the appropriate dose based on infection severity.
Paediatric dosing is weight-based: 20–40mg/kg/day divided into three doses. A 10kg child typically receives 125–250mg three times daily. The 250mg capsule can be opened and mixed into food for children who cannot swallow capsules. Liquid amoxicillin suspension is often preferred for young children.
Most infections require 5–7 days. Ear infections in adults: 5 days. Chest infections: 5–7 days. Skin infections: 5–7 days. Dental infections: 3–5 days. Never stop early just because you feel better — incomplete courses drive antibiotic resistance. If symptoms persist after 3 days, contact your doctor.
No — do not double up. If 250mg is insufficient for your infection, a physician will prescribe 500mg in place of 250mg, not in addition to it. Taking more than prescribed does not speed recovery and increases the risk of side effects including diarrhoea and thrush.
Amoxicillin requires a prescription in the USA, UK, EU, and most developed countries. In some countries including India, it may be dispensed without a formal prescription. Regardless of availability, antibiotic stewardship guidelines recommend physician diagnosis before starting treatment to ensure appropriate antibiotic selection.
